FilmCraft (v0.6.0) review: what it can edit today and what still stops it replacing Premiere Pro
FilmCraft is a free video editor that copies the Premiere Pro workflow, with a keyboard-shortcut editor that offers Premiere, Final Cut and Avid layouts. Its authors measure it at 86% feature breadth and about 56% ready for real work.

What works today
- Timeline editing, trimming, multicam, keyframes, effects (the project measured 100% of Premiere's effects as present), transitions, titles, captions and audio mixing.
- Colour: eight built-in looks with intensity, plus faded film, sharpen and vibrance, written as colour transforms in code rather than LUT files.
- Hardware decoding on macOS and Windows, and for H.264 and HEVC on Linux. Blend modes and common effects run on the GPU.
- Export with optional hardware H.264 encoding on macOS, and on Windows and Linux with an NVIDIA GPU; H.265 export is hardware-only; HDR sequences export Main 10 PQ or HLG with NVENC.
- Imports sequences as FCP7 XML, AAF or OTIO.
What the project says is missing
From the README's Status section (re-measured 10 Oct 2026 against Premiere Pro 26.5.2): feature breadth ~86%, ready for real work ~56%. The three gaps the team names: speed on big footage (Lumetri, keys and export rendering still run on the CPU), Premiere projects (.prproj files cannot be opened), and no plug-ins (no VST3, Audio Units or OpenFX).
"Ready for real work" and "feature breadth" are the project's own published estimates from each repository's ROADMAP.md (last re-measured 10 Oct 2026). They are honest, but they are self-graded. We quote them; we did not measure them.
If FilmCraft will not open on Windows
The README documents one specific crash: on some AMD graphics drivers the app flashes in Task Manager and quits before a window appears. The cause is the OpenGL backend. Set the environment variable WGPU_BACKEND to dx12 or vulkan before launching (in PowerShell, from the folder containing the executable), and it starts. The same trick applies to the other Craft apps, which share the graphics layer.
How to install FilmCraft
Option 1: the ArtCraft Launcher (recommended by the project)
The ArtCraft Launcher (v0.2.0) installs FilmCraft and every other Craft app, picks the right build for your computer and updates them. Get it from the official apps page or the launcher's GitHub releases.
Option 2: a standalone installer
Every release on GitHub ships these files (replace 0.6.0 with the current version):

We never host installers. Download from GitHub or getartcraft.com only, and check the file against SHA256SUMS.txt in the same release if you want to be sure.
Questions
Can FilmCraft open Premiere Pro projects?
Not yet. .prproj import is on the gap list. Export your sequence from Premiere as FCP7 XML, AAF or OTIO and FilmCraft will read that.
Does FilmCraft work with plug-ins?
No. There is no VST3, Audio Units or OpenFX support at the moment.
Is FilmCraft good enough to replace Premiere?
The team itself says about 56% ready for real work and calls it alpha. Short projects with common codecs are realistic; long-form work on big footage will hit the CPU-bound rendering.

Yes, open source under MIT or Apache-2.0, offline, no account.
